Smoke Alarm Installation Melbourne — From $100
Working smoke alarms aren't a "nice to have." In Victoria they're a legal requirement for every dwelling — and from 2027 the rules tighten further for rentals. Most homes we visit have at least one alarm that's expired (they all expire after 10 years), missing, or in the wrong location.
We install, replace and check smoke alarms across west Melbourne. Request a callback below.
What's Included
- Site walk to identify required alarm locations (Australian Standard AS3786)
- Removal of expired or non-compliant existing units
- Supply and installation of photoelectric, 10-year-sealed-battery, or hardwired interconnected units
- Functional test of each alarm
- Logbook entry for rental compliance (we provide a one-page certificate confirming the install)
- Clean-up
Hardwired interconnected installs require an electrician for new wiring. We carry licensed-electrician partners for those jobs and quote the combined work up front.

Why Locals Choose Us
- We know the rental rules. From March 2027 the Residential Tenancies Regulations require annual checks. We supply the compliance logbook entry every visit.
- Right placement. Hallways, top of stairs, bedrooms — the standards changed in 2022 and most older houses don't meet them. We bring them up to spec.
- Photoelectric only. Ionisation alarms react slower to smouldering fires (the most common house-fire pattern). Australian fire authorities recommend photoelectric — we install nothing else.
- Real callback. Form-based bookings, fast turnaround.
Other Services We Offer
- Handyman — combine with other small jobs to save the second visit
- Ceiling Fan Installation — different job, same ceiling
- Letterbox Installation — front-of-house refresh
- Pet Door Installation — odd-job bundle
- Awning Installation — outside while we're inside doing the alarms
Frequently Asked Questions
How many smoke alarms do I need?
Minimum one per storey. Plus: outside every sleeping area, inside bedrooms if any door is normally closed when sleeping. Most older houses are short by 1–2 alarms.
What's the difference between photoelectric and ionisation?
Photoelectric detects smouldering smoke faster (most home fires). Ionisation detects flaming fires faster but produces more false alarms from cooking. Australian standards now favour photoelectric.
Do I need interconnected alarms?
In Victoria, interconnected alarms are mandatory for new builds and major renos from 2022. For existing homes they're recommended but not legally required for owner-occupiers. For rentals, the 2027 rule changes are tightening — best to install ahead.
How long does the install take?
Single alarm: 20 minutes. Whole-house battery (3–4 alarms): 60–90 minutes. Hardwired interconnected: half-day plus electrician time.
Do you provide rental compliance certificates?
Yes — every install includes a one-page logbook entry confirming compliance with AS3786 and the relevant Victorian regulation. Your property manager will accept it.
